USE CASES

MODRAD-SC can be operated in two different modes: In the standard configuration it is a fully O-RAN Alliance compliant CAT-A O-RU which supports all mandatory features of the O-RAN defined fronthaul interface for the Control, User and Synchronization plane (CUS planes). It can be seamlessly integrated with major O-DU/O-CU software stacks from e.g. SRS or OAI to realize a fully 3GPP and O-RAN compliant 5G-NR gNB. Together with a third-party 5G Core you can create a complete 5G-NR radio access network and attach commercial off-the-shelf 5G user equipment.

When operated in SDR-mode, the MODRAD-SC will become a fully tunable and customizable software defined radio which can stream arbitrary time domain IQ samples from and to the on-system RAM of the MODRAD-SC compute module / baseband processor. Through this feature arbitrary waveforms (e.g. for 6G candidate technology experiments) can be radiated and received through the 4 antenna ports. The preferred method for IQ sample streaming is via MATLAB or Python for which drivers and example scripts will be shipped together with MODRAD-SC.

In its standard configuration, the MODRAD-SC comes with a pre-installed n78 small cell front-end module (Option #: MB-FEM-SC-n78-4T4R), which enables a fully 3GPP 5G-NR compliant RF. It enables TDD operation in the n78 band (3.3-3.8GHz) with two component carriers, each with 100MHz bandwidth and 4Tx, 4Rx for 4x4 MIMO operation, with each of the 4 antenna ports delivering a maximum of +27dBm (0.5W) average output power per port. 


A 4T4R FR3 small cell front-end module is currently under development and is expected to be available in early 2026. In addition to our standard front ends, all types of custom front ends and mmWave front ends are available on request.

With full control of the MODRAD over the single 25G Ethernet link, which is fully IEEE 802.3 Ethernet compliant, it is extremely easy to set up large testbeds with multiple MODRADs in a network with just one server or O-DU. This enables 6G candidate technologies such as Cell Free or Distributed MIMO and provides the necessary synchronisation requirements. In addition, custom 6G waveforms can be streamed to enable communication and sensing or energy-efficient waveforms, for example, while taking advantage of the O-RAN fronthaul.

From custom front ends or software for our MODRAD platform, to testbed setups with MODRAD for proof of concepts such as cell free networks or communication and sensing, to FR3 setups with reflective intelligent surfaces (RIS). In addition to our FR3 RIS & ARRAY, we can also produce other array dimensions at other frequencies on request, and we can also provide analogue phase shifters for phased arrays or hybrid beamforming.
